Stop Gay Racism & Internalised Homophobia

There are too many gay men online who think statements such as "No Asians" and "Straight Acting" and "No Femmes/Queens" are an acceptable use of language. These statements are offensive to gay racial minorities and other gay men who are proud of their sexuality. These statements are not "preferences" they are "insults" and gay men everywhere need to stop using them. If you are a gay man and use statements like these in your profile, but don't think you are a racist or a homophobe, then please use this blog to get educated on why you are wrong. It's really that simple. If you find this blog challenging, good. It's meant to challenge you. It's not here to make you feel warm and fuzzy on the inside. i think what you are doing is amazing and commendable (although i am sure there are people who would disagree). living in the “cultural mosaic” that is Canada I constantly see blatant homophobia within the “community” - online and in person. it’s interesting/sad to see the same holds true for other parts of the world but i’m glad you have this blog as a platform to raise awareness over issues like gay racism. cheers!

Thank you. Yep I agree. In white western societies being gay seems to mean mandatory masculinity and xenophobia. How far we have come … In a backwards direction. I think western gays are so desperate to be accepted by their heterosexual masters they imitate white, hetero, male privilege more intensely than any other minority.

It makes me laugh so hard that most of these people that are bitching at you are white. The same white people that don't understand they have a privilege. Honestly the more people bitch at you the more I wanna laugh. Most of them probably feel like they should justify "I shouldn't like femmes or blacks or asians or etc" but why?! Why?! You don't even know every single person like that you're describing. You're just being oppressive. Just because you're blunt it doesn't make you wrong. :)

Funny detail: I learned the meaning of "cisgender" from a local magazine directed at the probably-not-so-masc-and-str8 members of the LGBT community.

Lol. I had to look it up on Wikipedia. I had NO idea! I do like the term though, but unfortunately I fear it will never penetrate the wider community that thinks the best way to describe gender is through one-dimensional lenses of “straight/gay acting” and “ladylike/butch”.

The first time I mentioned it to a guy who called himself “straight acting” he threw the biggest tantrum at me (gurl!) because he thought I had just called him a “sissy”!

Your blog's awesome. I'm a Melburnian as well, and I've come across a lot of these same profiles. Being an abled, cisgender, white guy, it is very easy for me to slip into a place of privilege and prejudice, especially since my sexual preference does direct me more towards those of my race and more "masculine" identity. It's funny that what strikes me about the people on your blog is their supreme LAZINESS - like they can't just quietly block an Asian who messages them? Still callous, but..

Isn't a little hypocritical that you claim people are insulting other gays when you're calling them a "facade of hyper-masculinised garbage" or saying they are "self-hating bile"? If someone is physically unattracted to feminine men I don't see that as racist or homophobic, it's just what they find sexually appealing. Yes you are 100% correct. It is INTENSELY hyprocritical of me to hate on these guys. Just like its INTENSELY hypocritical for all those awful people of colour to hate on those poor innocent neo-nazis. Just like its INTENSELY hypocritical for all those awful feminists to hate on all the poor men who have oppressed them for thousands of years. Yep, I see your logic for sure. We should just all shut up, and whenever we see a racist or homophobic statement, we should look the other way, because if we don’t we might end up offending a white, racist homophobe! So at what point do we say homophobic language is acceptable? When its only some gay guy calling himself “straight acting”, or calling some other guy “a queen” or “a femme”? Or when another gay man says all non-heterosexuals should stop giving gays a bad name and start acting “like real men”? I’ve even heard some gay men say people living with HIV deserve to die and shouldn’t be allowed access to medication because they lived like “filthy faggots”. At what point does homophobic language stop being unacceptable? Where do we draw the line? How can any of it be seen as harmless, when every single homophobic word perpetuates, on some level, the myth that somehow to be gay is to be inferior to being heterosexual?

I can just hear the white privileged whine right now: “But it’s JUST A DOLL! How can a doll be RACIST? It’s political correctness gone mad!!!” And the tone of the article below makes me ill. Just look at the language that has been deliberately chosen to invoke sympathy for people who want to perpetuate offensive imagery against non-whites: “…a casualty of the worldwide crusade against racism” - they make it sound like the anti racism movement is a bunch of crazed zealots determined to unfairly enforce their views onto the poor, innocent white victims of the world. I don’t think anyone realises how much I hate unconscious, heteronormative, assimilationist, racist gays who sound more homophobic than a pack of redneck born-again christians. I really, really hate them.

i'm not one of the douches you'd find on this blog but is there a non-racist, non-femmephobic way of stating your sexual preferences?

Focus on your likes not your dislikes when writing your profile. And just stop mentioning race altogether.

Ps: agreed re: the masc white guys comment below. That’s why I think people should stop mentioning race and start focussing on what they are into - sexual activities, or interests/hobbies, or whatever they want. Just stop with this whole “no Asians, whites only, no queens, no this, no that, normal only” bullshit!
